To investigate abdominal pain, stones, or organ problems.

How to prepare

Fasting for 6–8 hours is often advised; a full bladder may be needed.

What happens during the test

A probe with gel is moved over the abdomen to capture images.

What abnormal results may mean

Findings such as stones, cysts or organ changes are interpreted by a radiologist.
